Dun PRE and spanish buckskins

Dun and buckskin are accepted colors in the pure spanish horse. With the increase of interest in the dilute colors, gene testing has become widespread.

The University of California, Davis, USA, has a unit devoted to genetic colour testing for horses. They are most helpful, and will DNA-test for color genes using hair samples.

DNA testing has now been developed for the dun colour. Evaluation as to whether a horse is true dun used to be done by evaluation of the appearance and endurance of certain markings, including

  • zebra-type stripes or barring on the legs
  • dorsal stripe, especially if it extends into the tail
  • donkey-style extensions of the dorsal stripe down over the shoulders, forming a cross

Visual indications of dun in the PRE spanish horse

As seen on this son of a purebred spanish bayo buckskin stallion. Leg bar stripes, dorsal stripe into tail and cobwebbing on the face are all visual indications of dun.

Jaleoso - aka Junior - showed all these at birth. Now a sturdy two year old, he has lost none of the distinctive markings, except that his legs are a more solid black.
