Buying a young PRE Direct from a Stud in Spain

Youngsters of excellent lineage, who run out for the first few years, start life country strong, without stable or corral restriction.

PRE colts at the studs in Spain are usually brought in in their 3rd year. This is the time for Revision. As they are more likely to sell if they have been ridden, work on the youngsters will begin when they come in from the country.

Once they come into the stables, they are introduced to basic handling and work under saddle. As their time in training progresses, costs to the breeder add up, and their price increases.

VALUE of a PRE

The value of a PRE can be regarded as a balance between movement, bloodlines and training.

A horse bought straight off the country, or early in his training can therefore be a good value investment.

An early choice can be made of a healthy horse with good movement and good lines. These qualities carry a value, then training adds to it.

One option used by some serious dressage riders we work with is to

  • locate a good youngster who fulfils the criteria of size, beauty, bloodlines and movement
  • purchase him as is, unhandled, or with basic handling
  • place him in training with Royal school Rider, Emilio Ordonez, for the time period chosen

Select young horses, with wisdom, from carefully chosen lines and PRE studs.

  • Do your homework on bloodlines
  • Ask questions
  • Keep commonsense and horse sense turned on

This page is a collection of notes made over the years, as we have worked through many cases. They represent what was happening at that moment, in that case. Some names have been altered to protect privacy.

Our horses all have ’stable names’. They also have the traditional, regal sounding Spanish names with the Roman numeral suffixes that are their entry in the Spanish Stud Book. We tend to use the stable names to facilitate initial search and recall.
