See the Buying Wisely Guide for tips, real life case studies and amber warning flags

reminder In the meantime, the bones of an article soon to be added to our spanish horse sales series.

Buy a bay Spanish Horse in Spain

For example, you may be wanting to buy a Bay Pure Spanish horse in Spain. How important are bloodlines - and surely there are more than Yeguada Militar and Guardiola that produce bay.

  • Yeguada Militar means Military Stud
  • YM, escalera, guardiola. All are PRE - pura raza espanola studs in spain, known for their bay lineage.
  • Advertisements are quick to claim these bloodlines.
  • Could it be be just one vague ancestor back in the 4th generation? Check it out.

Yeguada Militar stallions are freely available to many PRE studs and andalusian breeders in Spain.

  • Check each horse and his sire independently
  • The mare is of equal importance, check her lineage out also.
  • And ultimately, look at the horse you are buying. He is the final decider.

Buying a Spanish Horse in Spain

  • Ask the questions YOU want answers to. Be direct.
  • Don’t accept a fob-off, or a ’sideways’ answer. for e.g. If you ask: Is he quiet in traffic? Then you want a definite ’Yes.’
If they say ’Well, he goes out with the other horses’ - that is not telling you what you need to know.
  • If the answer is not favorable, most people will try to avoid answering it, rather than lying outright.
  • Listen to that common sense voice inside!
  • NEVER be pressurised.
If you are told ’Oh, there’s someone coming tomorrow’ or ’there’s someone else really interested’ then tell them that’s fine, the ’someone else’ can have him! There are plenty of other spanish horses in Spain.

These points relate to any horse purchase, I guess. As a smart client once said to me, ’If it don’t smell right it almost certainly isn’t.’
Don’t be afraid to trust your instinct - and ASK QUESTIONS!

THERE IS NO HURRY. Don’t get Buying Fever

Your horse IS there. Taking a few weeks extra now could save you months of hassle - and even heartache - later on.

Re buying a spanish horse from a website: It can be done with confidence - and equally you could end up with an expensive mistake.

A flashy website with lush pictures and dreamy descriptions is no guarantee of a sound horse or an honest dealer. It could just mean they have a good website designer.
