There are many tourists in Jerez right now because of Feria.

The School . . .

Pause = Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre: The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art.

. .is well known to tourists, and a steady stream of visitors to the weekly displays certainly helps pay the bills.

Last night was the traditional annual Gala Presentation. We were there, at 10.30 at night, along with probably 1500 other spectators.

But most of these were not tourists - they were Jeresanos, here to celebrate a fierce pride in 'our school'. More so, 'our riders', many of whom come from the area and have stayed with their roots. And most of all 'Our Rafael' riding 'el Invasor' , the much loved big white PRE, bred by the personification of horse-rich-Jerez: patron of the equestrian art and founder of the School, Alvaro Domecq.

The stands were full of the colour of flamenco dresses, ladies who had come direct from feria, with flowers and combs, shawls and mantillas. Men in every style, from vaquero to double breasted navy blazers, suit and tie to casual country. This is a part of the whole richness that IS feria.

The display at the School varies as much as spanish temperament in its presentation. Some days it is perfect, some days everything that can go wrong, does.

Like life.

Last night, there were thing that nitpickers could snipe at, but if you chose to be wide eyed and delighted, drinking in the whole, it was sheer magic.

It may not have had the formal perfection of Vienna, but it had the harmony of 12 grey PREs half-passing in across the arena, the breathtaking brisk-trot-intertwi ning of three carriages - one 3-, one 4- and one 5-horse team - and the sheer explosive charismatic presence of Rafael Soto and Invasor.

I chose to be enchanted.

It was in an unnamed city in Eastern Europe. I saw the traffic light as we drove by on day 1, and determined to capture it. (see photo by clicking the url below.)

First I had to find it again. Ah, but many years in the totally illogical streets of Jerez made post- communist-semi-organised navigation a breeze.

Then - to capture the flashing moment when the smiley appeared just for a brief-warning-time.

Find the perfect spot - ah, in the middle of the tarmac. Traffic? A minor inconvenience!

And then it began to rain - hard.

So here is this elderly-blonde-in-hiking-boots, in the middle of a grey street, getting soaked - and taking photos of a traffic light!!! I am surprised the secret police didn't turn up.

Tho' 10 minutes later I nearly got manhandled by a heavy when I tried to take a photo of - believe it or not - a Spar supermarket.

I was photo-ing the lovely display of flowers at a seller outside, then turned the camera to get a shot of the colourful fruit stand inside the Spar. The heavy was the security guard - he looked like something out of a Terminator movie.

He came towards me saying 'no photo, no photo'. So being the rational citizen i am I said 'Why not?'
'No photo, no photo'
'This is a public place'
'No Photo'
'Give me a reason'
'NO PHOTO'

The passers-by, in accordance with a past that perhaps made them wary of getting involved, kept on passing, pretending interest in the other side of the street.

I still had the camera raised, and for a moment I thought he was going to snatch it from me. Instead he just put his hand up over the lens, and loomed in approved Terminator-threatening-mode.

I stood still ( my pulse didn't!), and he moved away. And as he got back to his post, I lifted the camera, pointed it at him - and clicked the shutter.

Then left - rapidly
